Nigerians are naturally resilient. We have a 'no shaking' way of life and I Think that's one trait that stands us out. We've got an amazing way of diverting our attentions from the issues that make our dear country sour... escapism at its best. Ok, so over the months there's been a unanimous complain from all corners of the country- hike in the prices of goods, increase in the price of virtually everything (services included ) and its horrors
In recent times, foodstuffs and basic home commodities have become sacred.Starvation has characterized our daily life.I think (or should I say I believe) this is the worse phase of recession that we've ever experienced. We know how the prices of rice, beans and the likes have skyrocketed ( it is a season of "double double"and"loke loke")
Now this isn't funny! One " shinkili" Oral-B toothpaste goes for #300. Egbami!!!! How do we expect struggling families to afford it.That "shinkinli" toothpaste was ordinarily #70-#100
Sighs!! No wonder we have a lot of stinking mouths this days. The whole thing has made people resort to DIY (Do- It-Yourself) with salt and toothbrush!!
Having said that, this economic glitch like every other issue we have come across has only exposed our creativity and ability to survive.
Picture this : a woman that turns anything wooden to firewood. On a normal day, that woman would say, "Lailai ...Emi o le da na igi o" ( I can never Cook with firewood)
OR
My mum that cooks everything "cookable" when there's light. My mum ehn!! She'd want to make very good use of PHCN Power supply knowing fully well that gas is now on the high side and if PHCN decides to play with their "switch",she'd have to use the gas cooker.
You know the Nigerian tradition of having Rice and stew on Sundays after church? I think Sundays just got even more special because some Nigerian families only add protein to their meals on Sundays. Some people might want to call it poverty, but I refuse to see it as that.
The way I see it, desperate times call for desperate measures and we, Nigerians are excellent when it comed to applying desperate measures.
I believe we are wired to surmount any challenge tossed at us. Our default setting was specially programmed by God, allowing us to find our way out, regardless of how depressing our situation may be. I call it the "Nigerian pakoness". We aren't just blessed with natural resources, we are inbuilt with the Nigerian Survival Tendency.
